James Toney Gets Controversial TKO Win In Rahman Rematch

James Toney(71-6-3) TKO 3's Hasim Rahman(45-7-2)

It was not the most surprising thing to see controversy reign over this rematch, however there are good points for each side, and one absolute. Hasim Rahman came in looking in impeccable shape, as did James Toney (a ripe 226). The first round saw both guys feeling each other out, with Rahman doing the better work to win the round.

The 2nd round saw Toney land a clean right hand that stunned Rahman for a bit. The round went on uneventful until Rahman leaned in unguarded and got caught above the eyebrow with the back of Toney's head. It was clearly accidental at the hands of Toney's patented bob and weave that he does, and Rahman's fault for leaning in unguarded. It was not the type of cut that a fight gets stopped for by any means. Toney went on to land a clean left before the bell, closely outpointing Rahman in round 2. Rahman had his jab working from the start, but something happened in the 2nd round. He began losing his head and coming into full range for Toney. At the end of the round, you could see Rahman's head was evidently not in it anymore.

Round 3 began with a full barrage of clean shots from Toney, and little jabbing from Rahman. The jabs he threw were right up close where Toney could land easily. With about 30 seconds left in the round, Toney landed a big right that actually saw Rahman do a chicken dance, noticeably wielding shaky legs. Toney went ahead landing cleanly until the bell, moving ahead on the cards. When Rahman got to his corner, he complained that he couldn't see, ignoring his corner's treatment and preparation for the 4th round by calling the doctor over for a way out. The cut was quickly cleaned, as it was above the brow and easily manageable. Rahman kept at the doctor, seemingly begging for a stoppage as his corner attempted to get him ready for round 4. The doctor (without checking the actual wound) then motioned to the table and the fight was stopped. Rahman continued to sit on his stool with both eyes wide open with no blood streaming, complaining and hurling excuses as if his conscience was getting the best of him.

After a few minutes of discussion, a predicted no contest was announced as a TKO stoppage for Toney. The Rahman team argued that the doctor had stopped the fight because of the cut, however he never even examined it. Rahman kept telling him 'I can't see.' The doctor having not looking at the cut, the commission then ruled a TKO. There are valid arguments for both sides, but the absolute fact of the matter is Rahman was looking for a way out and quit on his stool because of a basic cut above the brow. When you get hurt twice in the early rounds from a Toney hook, you know it's lights out because of his skills and history of warming up in the middle rounds. Toney doesn't have KO power in the heavyweight division anymore, but Rahman was about to be the first man in five years to be stopped by Toney. He knew that, and cleverly decided to take advantage of the doctor and everyone else's gullibility. I only hope that this decision is not overturned, and Rahman never steps foot in a television bout again. The future of James Toney is still faced with question marks, but at least he has one. Rahman is finished, and has permanently stained his career as a quitter with no heart. The heavyweight division does not need to see him to fight again.

Wladimir KLITSCHKO vs Tony THOMPSON - Odds And Prediction

LIVE From Germany @ 4:30pmEST / Replay @ 10pmEST
Tony Thompson (31-1) vs Wladimir Klitschko (50-3)
(IBO, IBF, WBO Heavyweight Title)

Klitschko Wins [-650]
Thompson Wins [+450]
Fight Lasts 9 1/2 Rounds [+125]
Fight Ends Under 9 1/2 Rounds [-165]

Now on to my prediction. Anyone that knows me knows full well I've picked Thompson to win this since the fight was first made, and this is probably the first time in years that I have picked the other side of a Klitschko bout. Thompson has waited over a year for his overdue shot at a title, he and his big family are broke, and he is very hungry. Klitschko surely knows that he won't be able to win putting on the type of performance like he did against Sultan Ibragimov. Thompson has very underrated power, has the height and reach to match Klitschko, and throws a lot of punches. Thompson's chin is a somewhat unknown. We know it is decent, but we'll see how good it is today. Klitschko will need to test Thompson early and not allow him to set the pace. That is what happened against Corrie Sanders. The outcome of the fight should be pretty clear after the 3rd round. Thompson is usually pretty methodical with his pace, and has good defense. He will need to up the ante to beat Klitschko, but I'm sure he knows that. After a pretty even and uneventful 1st round, Thompson jumps out early in the 2nd and lands a clean stunning left hook on Klitschko to set the pace. Thompson has a sizable lead going into the 7th round, and is able to finish things off in the latter stages. Thompson by KO.

NBA: Brand To Sixers, Maggette To Warriors, And More

Elton Brand may be ready to shock his buddy Baron Davis and the Clippers, as it appears the Philadelphia 76ers have swayed the highly touted beast of a free agent from the west to the east. The Sixers have offered Brand a contract worth $82 million over five years, which is actually $8 million less than what Golden State offered him. It is still all speculation at this point, but word from the inside is Brand will indeed leave L.A. for Philly. Fellow Clipper Corey Maggette has received a significant offer from the Warriors worth $50 million over five years, far more than the mid-level exception($5.585 million) other contending teams are offering him. The Orlando Magic appear to be ready to sign Warriors free agent shooting guard Mickael Pietrus to a mid-level deal after playing his first five seasons with Golden State. Portland's James Jones will sign a multi-year deal with the Orlando Magic. Things should begin to thoroughly heat up tomorrow, as teams are officially able to start signing players as of midnight tonight.

MLB All-Star Sham Was Announced With Boos

This year's MLB all-star team was announced yesterday, faced with a new kind of scrutiny. When baseball decided to make the game more meaningful by giving World Series home-field advantage to the winning league, it was a relatively new idea and the fans weren't sure what to think about it. Now that the dust has settled five years later, changes are being demanded from all circles. In no way imaginable can you put that kind of meaning on an all-star game played by starters voted on by the fans. Which is it going to be? They can either shrink the size of fan voting relevance, or forget about the harebrained idea of a meaningful all-star game. To be fair, it also appears even coaches and players have lost their minds, voting in Jason Varitek's miserable .218 average as a reserve(the Red Sox pitching staff has also been bad this year, so don't give me any of that nonsense of him being a master at handling a staff). So here it is; your 2008 MLB All-Star team:

NBA: Wizards Shell Out For Arenas, Warriors Desperate For Move

Injury prone Gilbert Arenas' ego obviously got the better of him when he thought it would be easy to find a successful team that would pay him the maximum salary. He backtracked and accepted a stay with the Wizards worth 6 years and $111 million, as if he was doing them a huge favor for taking a small cut from the maximum. If he gets hurt again next year, they may be regretting this move for a long time. Golden State is still fuming over Baron Davis. It is being reported that they are now in talks with signing Clipper Corey Maggette. They have a lot of cap space now, and plan to offer him more than the mid-level salary, which is more than any other team is willing to pay. It looks like Elton Brand is intent on staying in L.A. The Warriors have also expressed interest in Andre Iguodala and Josh Smith.

Golden State Makes Brand An Offer He Can't Refuse

The L.A. Clippers thought they had a very good situation going. They just nabbed Baron Davis from the Warriors, and good friend Elton Brand was near agreeing to a pay cut to stay there. Now Golden State has made Brand an offer no one in their right mind could or would refuse. In kind of a revenge move, the Warriors have offered Brand a whopping 5 years worth $90 million. Brand had previously disclosed that he would take a pay cut to around $12-13 million to stay with the Clippers, and it would be one of the most surprising moves in history to see an NBA player turn down at least $6 million more a year.

NBA: Davis To Clippers Done, Josh Smith In Philly

The Baron Davis deal to the L.A. Clippers is basically done. Davis will reportedly get 5 years worth $65 million. Corey Maggette has been talked up by many teams, including Utah, Boston, and San Antonio. The bottom line is he wants to win now. But he is going to want to play way more than what the Celtics can offer him, so that's pretty much out. The Spurs look to have the upper hand in those mid-level talks. Josh Smith is in Philadelphia today to meet with the Sixers. Smith is a restricted free agent, but Atlanta Hawks management have been pretty cold to him so far this off-season. If the Hawks do match the Sixers' deal, it's still a question mark that Smith even still wants to stay in Atlanta, though kind of doubtful that he won't be.

NBA Trade Talks Have Officially Begun

July 1 is the first day NBA teams can begin free agent talks, and this year is a huge year as far as possibilities go. The free agency market is loaded, and some of the biggest names have already opted out of their contracts: Elton Brand, Baron Davis, and Corey Maggette. Coincidentally, the two L.A. Clippers may have a reason to stay, as it is being heavily reported right this minute that Baron Davis is close to signing a 5 year deal worth around $65 million with the Clippers. As somewhat quiet as it is so far, Antawn Jamison has officially resigned with Washington Wizards for 4 years worth $50 million. Check back on A SPORTS PUNDIT regularly for exclusive rumors and updates.

Pacquiao Dominates Weak Champ, Valero Next?

Manny Pacquiao(47-3) needed just 9 rounds Saturday to brutally knock out David Diaz(34-2-1), the weakest lightweight champ in years, though hyped recently by some boxing writers as much more, to win the WBC lightweight belt. This was a surprise to very few, although the hype surrounding Pacquiao easily defeating a lightweight champion has not even reached its peak yet. He has much work to do in order to consider himself 'the' man at the loaded lightweight division.

Bob Arum (Pacquiao promoter) is eying a November showdown with undefeated power puncher and WBA super featherweight champ Edwin Valero(24-0). This fight has been talked about for almost two years, mostly by Valero's people, but had always hit a bump in the road because of Valero's failure to get a license to fight in the U.S. Valero is known for having the record of 19 straight 1st round knockouts in his first 19 fights, and has yet to go the full distance with anyone. The fight is specifically being made now because all the other top lightweights already have big fights booked for the fall. Putting that into perspective, this is the perfect time for this power bout to be made. If Pacquiao wins, it will likely set up a unification bout early next year with either of the other mammoth lightweight champs.

Chagaev Out Again, Will Lose Title

The mandatory WBA heavyweight title rematch between champ Ruslan Chagaev(24-0) and Nikolai Valuev(48-1) has been postponed for the 2nd time, this time almost a week before the bout on July 5th. Chagaev was forced to pull out again when his knee buckled in a sparring session, putting him out of action likely for almost the rest of the year. According to the WBA's rules and regulations, Chagaev will have to lose his title and win it back at a later time. Since he won the title back in April of '07, he has only managed to complete one voluntary defense(against Matt Skelton), and has yet to go through with a mandatory.

John Ruiz(43-7) looks to be the one in line for another shot at the title against Valuev, a rematch from when Valuev took the belt from him over a year ago in Germany. The Ruiz camp was banking on Chagaev pulling out again long before it happened, and wasted no time letting the WBA know their intentions to follow up on the rules. It looks like a Ruiz/Valuev II fight for the WBA title will happen sometime in September.

Sergio Mora In Talks To Move Up, Face Pavlik

New WBC Light Middleweight champion Sergio Mora(21-0) appears to be in serious talks with dumping his title and moving back up in weight to face undisputed champ Kelly Pavlik(34-0) this fall. Mora previously had other ideas on how to move on, but those fights would have been in the Light Middleweight division, something Vernon Forrest would not allow. Forrest immediately let it be known that he would take full advantage of his 'iron-clad' rematch clause in their contract, demanding a quick rematch. The word is Forrest will not go continue after Mora to the 160 pound limit, so Mora/Pavlik appears to be a go so far.

Pavlik's fall bout had originally been scheduled to be against sturdy and dangerous contender Marco Antonio Rubio, but as that is out the door, there really isn't a better fight out there for Kelly this fall, as he plans to waste no time taking on Arthur Abraham(27-0) early next year. Abraham is a week removed from his shocking 4th round stoppage of Edison Miranda. Mora has spent the majority of his career at the 160 limit, so it will not be that much of a stretch to come back up against Pavlik. The fight would ultimately take place at the end of September, or middle October.

2008 Preseason College Football Part V - ESPN

1. Ohio State

Raise your hand if you want to see the Buckeyes back in the BCS title game … didn't think so. But with an extraordinary number of juniors and seniors returning, Ohio State seems poised to become the first team in the 112-year history of the Big Ten to win three straight outright league titles. Even if the Buckeyes lose at USC on Sept. 13, they might end up playing in the BCS title game in Miami on Jan. 8.

2. Georgia

Georgia might be more explosive and talented than Ohio State, but the Bulldogs' schedule is much tougher. The Bulldogs play consecutive road games at South Carolina and Arizona State, then play at LSU and against Florida in Jacksonville. Throw in back-to-back home games against Alabama and Tennessee and a road game at Auburn, and it might be the toughest schedule in the country. If Georgia can navigate its way through the schedule with only one loss (or maybe two), Ohio State could be waiting for the Bulldogs in Miami.

3. Oklahoma

It's all about what's up front for the Sooners. Oklahoma has the country's top offensive line, led by Duke Robinson and Phil Loadholt, and one of the better defensive lines in the Big 12. With coach Bob Stoops switching to a no-huddle offense, the Sooners could be even more explosive than last season, when they led Division I-A with 80 touchdowns. Oklahoma doesn't have to play Missouri and gets Kansas and Texas Tech at home.

4. USC

Even after losing 10 players to the NFL draft, the Trojans still have future draft picks stacked up like cordwood. Quarterback Mark Sanchez might be better than the departed John David Booty, and Arkansas transfer Damian Williams will become a big-play threat at wide receiver. Trojans coaches believe Allen Bradford has a chance to become the next great USC tailback. The Trojans will be even better on defense than they were last season.

5. Florida

Last year's 9-4 record was pretty humbling for the Gators, especially after they won the BCS title in coach Urban Meyer's second season in 2006. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow won't be the only Gator running the football in 2008. USC transfer Emmanuel Moody and speedy freshman Chris Rainey will help alleviate some of the pressure on Tebow. Eight starters are back from what was a very young defense last season, and end Carlos Dunlap looks like a premier pass-rusher. The Gators play only one really tough road game: at Tennessee on Sept. 20.

6. Missouri

With quarterback Chase Daniel and speedy kick returner/receiver Jeremy Maclin back, the Tigers should be explosive again on offense. New starters at left tackle and center must play well. Missouri also returns 10 starters from a very underrated defense, but linebacker is a concern after injuries and defections depleted the unit during the spring. Missouri doesn't play Oklahoma, Texas A&M or Texas Tech.

7. Clemson

The Tigers appear to be the best team in the ACC, but how many times have we heard that during coach Tommy Bowden's tenure? The Tigers haven't won an ACC title since 1991, but this might be their best chance in a long, long time. Quarterback Cullen Harper, tailbacks James Davis and C.J. Spiller, and receiver Aaron Kelly lead what could be a very good offense -- if four new starters play well on the line. Replacing three starting linebackers also is a big concern. Clemson plays four of its first five games at home, but the opener against Alabama in the Georgia Dome will decide how the season goes.

8. Texas

Coach Mack Brown continues to haul in top-five recruiting classes each year, but bringing in defensive coordinator Will Muschamp from Auburn might have been his biggest addition in 2008. Muschamp wants the Longhorns to be meaner and more aggressive this season after they allowed 371.2 yards per game in 2007. On offense, Texas still hasn't settled on a starting tailback to replace Jamaal Charles, who led the Big 12 in rushing before bolting for the NFL draft.

9. West Virginia

The Mountaineers appear to be the team to beat in the Big East, especially with Rutgers and South Florida each having big holes to fill. Quarterback Pat White and tailback Noel Devine give the Mountaineers the potential to have an explosive offense, and new coach Bill Stewart is very excited about his team's fast linebackers.

10. Auburn

LSU has dismissed quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, which might open the door for Auburn in the SEC West. New offensive coordinator Tony Franklin still hasn't settled on a starting quarterback for his spread offense, but the Tigers will still be able to run the football. The Tigers will play Tennessee, LSU and Georgia at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and Florida rotates off the SEC schedule.

11. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders bring back record-setting quarterback Graham Harrell and receiver Michael Crabtree, but coach Mike Leach is most excited about his team's improved defense. Texas Tech is deeper and bigger up front on defense and the addition of a few key juco transfers makes it a big sleeper in the Big 12.

12. LSU

Even without Perrilloux, the Tigers are still good enough on the offensive line and in the backfield to contend for an SEC title. Redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee doesn't have to make a lot of big plays at quarterback; he just can't make too many mistakes. LSU's defense is still going to be very good, even without All-America tackle Glenn Dorsey and coordinator Bo Pelini, who left for Nebraska.

13. Arizona State

The Sun Devils aren't standing pat after last year's surprising 10-3 record. Coach Dennis Erickson has installed more four- and five-receiver sets on offense and a lot more blitzes on defense. Erickson is counting on a few juco transfers to help his offensive line, which struggled to protect quarterback Rudy Carpenter and gave up a school-record 55 sacks last season.

14. BYU

The Cougars look like the best bet from a non-BCS conference to crash the big boys' party this coming season. BYU returns 10 starters from an offense that averaged 442.8 yards and 30.1 points per game. Quarterback Max Hall is surrounded by a myriad of playmakers and should be better in his second full season under center. The defense must replace three of four starting linebackers, but the Cougars will easily be the class of the Mountain West Conference (and might even finish unbeaten).

15. Tennessee

Coach Phillip Fulmer overhauled much of his coaching staff and brought in Richmond's Dave Clawson to install a spread offense. New quarterback Jonathan Crompton looked good running the attack this spring, but he underwent elbow surgery shortly after practices ended. Safeties Eric Berry and Demetrice Morley are star players in the secondary, but replacing linebacker Jerod Mayo won't be easy. The Volunteers might be third-best in the SEC East behind Georgia and Florida.

16. Illinois

The Illini are going to really miss tailback Rashard Mendenhall, who left school after his junior season to enter the NFL draft. Quarterback Juice Williams will have to become more of a passing threat and receiver Arrelious Benn will have to become more involved on offense. Coach Ron Zook has signed three straight nationally ranked recruiting classes, so the Illini's talent continues to get better and better.

17. Kansas

The Jayhawks lost several of the key pieces -- tailback Brandon McAnderson, receiver Marcus Henry, offensive tackle Anthony Collins and cornerback Aqib Talib -- from last year's remarkable 12-1 season. But quarterback Todd Reesing returns to lead what should be another good offense, and new defensive coordinator Clint Bowen inherits nine returning starters. The schedule is much tougher than a year ago, including road games at South Florida and Oklahoma and home games against Texas and Texas Tech.

18. Wisconsin

Neither Allan Evridge nor Dustin Sherer played well enough to win the quarterback job, so coach Bret Bielema will wait until preseason camp to name a starter. Regardless of who starts, the Badgers will rely heavily on a quartet of running backs, led by Zach Brown and P.J. Hill. A defense that has a lot to prove under new coordinator Dave Doeren really needs to have top defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, who broke his right leg during spring practice.

19. Pittsburgh

Bill Stull, who injured his thumb in the 2007 opener and missed the rest of the season, moved ahead in the battle for the starting quarterback job. Stull came back with a stronger arm and better mobility. If the Panthers can establish a passing game to balance LeSean McCoy's running, the offense could be pretty explosive. Linebacker Scott McKillop, the top tackler in Division I-A in 2007, leads a defense budding with confidence after upsetting West Virginia 13-9 in last season's finale.

20. Virginia Tech

The Hokies were able to rely heavily on Bud Foster's defense last year and still win the ACC and play in the Orange Bowl. But without defensive end Chris Ellis, linebackers Xavier Adibi and Vince Hall, and cornerback Brandon Flowers, it won't be as easy for Virginia Tech this season. Coach Frank Beamer still hasn't decided how to use quarterbacks Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor, and top tailback Branden Ore was kicked off the team.

21. Fresno State

The Bulldogs bring back 10 starters on offense, including quarterback Tom Brandstater and tailback Ryan Mathews. Coach Pat Hill will have to replace 2007 WAC Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Riley. The Bulldogs play a typically tough nonconference schedule with games against Rutgers, Wisconsin and UCLA, so there won't be much room for error.

22. Wake Forest

Can Jim Grobe do it again? Wake Forest again seems as strong as any team in the ACC, where Florida State and Miami continue rebuilding. The Demon Deacons return 14 starters, including quarterback Riley Skinner and tailback Josh Adams. Replacing All-America center Steve Justice and wide receiver Kenneth Moore are top priorities. Wake Forest gets ACC foes Boston College and Clemson at home.

23. Oregon

The Ducks won't fall off the map after losing tailback Jonathan Stewart and quarterback Dennis Dixon. Sun Bowl hero Justin Roper and three other quarterbacks are battling for the starting job, and juco transfer LeGarrette Blount eased the Ducks' concerns about replacing Stewart. The running game might be really good again if Jeremiah Johnson recovers from a knee injury. The schedule might be pretty difficult with road games at Purdue, USC, Arizona State, California and Oregon State.

24. Michigan State

The Spartans were very close to accomplishing really big things in coach Mark Dantonio's first season, losing five games by six points or less. If Michigan State can rebuild both of its lines and replace top receivers Devin Thomas and Kellen Davis, they might win those close games in 2008. The Spartans open the season at California and play Michigan and Penn State on the road, but Notre Dame, Iowa, Ohio State and Wisconsin each go to East Lansing, Mich.

25. Penn State

Penn State suffered a big blow during spring practice when All-America candidate Sean Lee tore the ACL in his right knee, but 16 other starters are expected back. Quarterback Daryll Clark should be more mobile than departed starter Anthony Morelli and there's a boatload of talented receivers coming back. Road games at Ohio State and Wisconsin are tough tests.
